A Christmas Story:
What would happen if you were to remember what the Christmas season meant to you when you were a kid and how it made you feel?
These end of year holidays have more impact on the little ones than the adults. So chances are that when you think of these holidays there are some strong feelings that resurface and bring you memories of times gone by. For me, these anchored feelings bring back wonderful memories of happy times with family and friends. I remember the excitement that accompanied the holidays as we waited for the clock to strike 12:00 midnight on Christmas eve.
Incidentally, in Colombia, where I’m from, we celebrate Christmas at midnight on the 24th. This means a late night for everyone and lots of energy, food, family and fun for hours and hours before 12. Most importantly, it means Christmas day is actually a nicely relaxed morning with late sleeping and a hearty family brunch. We don’t play this “crack of dawn” game because guess what… we had just gone to bed an hour ago…
Back to the story… I remember the families, neighbors and friends getting together every night starting on the 16th of December for 9 nights straight to share in celebration. Every night we’d get together at a different family member’s place and there would be food, drink, music, singing, dancing, kids running around, etc. The smells of delicious home cooking coming from my aunts’ and uncles’ kitchens and all the traditions of the family taking place.
In my opinion “the holidays” have now changed into a overly commercialized opportunity for businesses to cash in on their easily persuaded crowd. I imagine this has always been the case but it’s one of those things I didn’t realize until I grew up. Being away from family and close friends for the holiday season makes one understand that what matters isn’t the xbox, the wii, the bakugan or any other gift that could be purchased. The gift that really matters is the gift of family, friendship, affection, and time. None of those are available on the internet, an infomercial or a chain store… The minimal value that is placed on the things that don’t cost anything is astounding. The way things of real value are taken for granted by those who don’t know better because “it’s our culture”, is in a way, disgusting to those who come from different backgrounds. This creates the Grinch effect.
People have called me a Grinch for as long as I can remember… However, the issue isn’t that I don’t like the season. The issue is that I don’t like the way the season is handled… It is up to the adults to teach the children what the season is really about and how to best celebrate it.
I want to wish my family and friends a very happy holiday season and I want you all to receive my warmest wishes. May we be together for the next one and celebrate as we used to. I love you all!
Enough ranting about the season… let’s get down to business!!!
New Year’s Resolutions:
Do you follow traditions of the new year? Do you wear yellow underwear for midnight on the 31st? Do you eat the 12 grapes when the clock strikes 12? Do you run around the neighborhood with empty suitcases? Do you make new year’s resolutions?
